Information for Fostering Animals:
What if I already have a family pet?
Foster parents provide temporary homes for kittens, puppies, dogs, cats and many other animals in need! The length of fostering can range from a few days to a few months depending on how long it takes to find them a permanent home. The love and devotion given during this time provides the animal a second chance to be adopted into a loving home. It also helps reduce the cost of housing the animal so the animal welfare organization can dedicate more funding to improving the lives of the many animals in need.
What if I have children?
Younger children should be introduced slowly to determine the compatibility with the new foster animal. It is recommended that an adult supervise all interactions between foster animals and young children. An important thing to prepare your family for is that fostering is temporary. Unless a foster family is fostering to see how a new pet will fit into their family, the foster animal will be leaving. Carefully preparing the areas that the foster animal will have access to can help reduce the potential for damage or destruction to your home.
Foster animals are usually so greatful to have a second chance at life that they are excited to meet new furry friends! Prior to placing an animal in your home, however, we will set up a meeting for you and your family (furry friends and all) to meet the potential foster animal outside of the home. We are commited to carefully preparing every foster home for the any challenges that may arise with placing a new animal into your home. All animals of the Humane Society of the Ozarks are fully vaccinated, micro-chipped and spayed/neutered prior to entering your home.
Time should be set aside daily to socialize and care for your new foster animal. Remember, animals are influenced by your behavior towards them. If you are eager and excited, they will be too!
OK, I'm in! What do I need to get ready?
Initial supplies should include an adequate supply of food, toys, housing space, and food or water bowls. If you have a children or a family pet, we will set up an appointment to meet with your family and the animal you would like to foster prior to placing him/her in your home. If the animal gets sick or injured while in your care, the Humane Society of the Ozarks will cover the cost to get the animal seen by a veterinarian. All we ask is that you provide adequate shelter, food, water and love for the animal!
Make sure that you have an emergency veterinarian telephone number handy at all times. Foster homes provide shelters with the valuable option of temporary homes to care for their animals. They bridge the gap and offer the crucial extra time and space needed to be able to prepare a shelter animal to be adopted into a forever home. Fostering homes also provide much needed love and socialization to animals who would not receive it otherwise. Fostering saves lives!!
